Newcastle secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, marking only their second league win there since 1972 and condemning United to their third straight home loss, a first in 45 years. The defeat left United in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone as their struggles deepened. Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored early for Newcastle with Isak continuing his impressive form, scoring in his sixth consecutive game.
Despite dominating possession, Manchester United were dismal, particularly in defending set-pieces, an issue that has plagued them throughout the season. Isak’s header from a corner and Joelinton’s outmuscling of Lisandro Martinez on another set-piece gave Newcastle a 2-0 lead by the 19th minute. United’s manager, Ruben Amorim made early changes, replacing Joshua Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo in the 33rd minute, signaling that his starting lineup had failed.
Even with the introduction of Marcus Rashford, United couldn’t break down Newcastle’s defense. In contrast, Eddie Howe’s side, looking to secure a Champions League spot and prepare for a Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal, controlled the game with relative ease. For United, the prospect of a relegation battle became more real with their poor defending and lack of attacking spark leaving them vulnerable.
Amorim’s team has now lost four straight games across all competitions and their inability to defend crosses has been a major liability. The team’s weak performances are raising questions about future transfers, as players like Zirkzee have yet to justify their high price tags. Despite a slight improvement after the break, United’s defeat highlighted their ongoing issues leaving Amorim under increasing pressure. Meanwhile, Newcastle continues to build momentum as they push for European football next season.
