Newcastle Tops Spurs 2-1 with Late Isak Goal

Newcastle United extended their unbeaten start to the season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at a vibrant St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 37th minute with a skillful finish after Lloyd Kelly pulled the ball back. Tottenham equalized in the 56th minute when Brennan Johnson’s shot following Pedro Porro’s deflected effort, turned into an own goal by Newcastle’s Dan Burn.

Despite Tottenham’s pressure and James Maddison’s near miss, Newcastle regained the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Joelinton’s excellent midfield work set up Jacob Murphy, who crossed for Alexander Isak to score the decisive goal. In another boost for Newcastle, Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first Premier League appearance since serving a 10-month ban for betting violations.

The home fans gave him a standing ovation when he came on as a substitute in the second half. The win lifted Newcastle to fifth place in the league with seven points, just two behind Manchester City and Liverpool. Manager Eddie Howe acknowledged the team’s need for improvement but praised their ability to grind out a victory. Tottenham dominated possession and took 20 shots, but they failed to convert their chances.

Their inability to score led to their first loss of the season, dropping them to 10th place. Manager Ange Postecoglou expressed frustration over missed opportunities and the inability to capitalize on their dominance. The game also highlighted Tonali’s emotional return, with fans showing their support through a warm reception and Italian flags. Howe appreciated Tonali’s impact and praised the strong bond between the player and supporters, describing the scene as “incredible.”
