Ruben Amorim’s words left fans in disbelief after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford, dropping them to 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone. When asked if the club was battling relegation, Amorim acknowledged the possibility and urged transparency with fans. United’s position is concerning as they experience their worst form in years, having lost three consecutive Premier League games and five of their last six.

They have earned just 22 points after 19 matches, putting them at risk and the defeat to Newcastle marked their third consecutive loss in the league. Since Amorim’s appointment in November, United has collected only seven points from a possible 24, with two wins, one draw and five losses. The numbers are worrying: United conceded 18 goals in December, their most in a month since 1964.

They also suffered a rare occurrence—three consecutive home league defeats for the first time since 1979. Under Ruben Amorim, United’s form worsened, averaging just 0.88 points per game. If they continue at this pace, they could finish the season with around 39 points, close to the relegation danger zone.

Despite the current slump, analysts predict that United will likely avoid relegation. Opta’s projections give them a 0.1% chance of finishing 18th, and a 0% chance of finishing in the bottom two. The most likely scenario sees United finishing in 12th place with 50 points, well above the relegation zone. While their recent form is troubling, the statistics suggest that United’s chances of relegation remain extremely low.
