Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed his disappointment over his team’s lack of spirit and fight during their 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League. The loss leaves Southampton winless in their first six matches this season, placing them 19th in the league with only one point marking their worst start to a campaign since the 1998-99 season. Martin felt particularly frustrated with how his players seemed to give up after Evanilson scored the opening goal for Bournemouth, who added two more goals before halftime.

He remarked, “They made 20 fouls to our 10 which sums up the whole game.” He criticized his team for lacking the necessary fight, aggression, spirit and togetherness, stating, “Whatever personnel you have on the pitch, if you lack these qualities, you’re going to have a big problem.” Although Southampton improved after a disappointing first half and received boos from their traveling supporters, Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ second-half header only served as a consolation.

Martin acknowledged that he had emphasized Bournemouth’s strengths and their approach to the game, but it appeared his players were unprepared. He reflected on the match, saying, “After starting well, the first setback we had was when they scored. At the end of the game, I thanked the players for their effort in the second half, but I believe that effort should be the bare minimum.”

Southampton will next face Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday at 15:00 BST, hoping to turn their fortunes around and secure their first victory of the season.
