Vitor Pereira Guides Wolves to 3-0 Victory Over Leicester
Vitor Pereira began his Wolves tenure with a dream start, guiding them to a 3-0 victory over struggling Leicester. The Portuguese coach, who replaced Gary O’Neil made four changes to the side including bringing in compatriots Goncalo Guedes and Rodrigo Gomes. Both players found the net within the first 36 minutes and Matheus Cunha added a third right before halftime, capitalizing on Leicester’s defensive errors.
Despite Ruud van Nistelrooy making a series of substitutions at the break, Leicester failed to threaten, allowing Wolves to halt a four-match losing streak and move within two points of Leicester, who remain above the relegation zone. Vitor Pereira expressed confidence that Wolves would remain in the Premier League and improve as the season progresses, praising the team’s spirit in his first game.
Pereira’s journey to managing in the Premier League had been long, with the 56-year-old previously hoping for the Everton job in 2013. His debut match was a comfortable one, though Wolves’ success stemmed from taking their chances rather than a complete transformation. Guedes opened the scoring after a cross from Nelson Semedo followed by Gomes capitalizing on a defensive mistake and Cunha rounded off the first-half scoring with a composed finish.
Leicester’s defense was porous with errors from Jannik Vestergaard and James Justin leading to the goals while goalkeeper Danny Ward’s positioning left much to be desired. After a 4-0 defeat at Newcastle, Leicester failed to respond and Van Nistelrooy acknowledged his side’s defensive frailty. Despite a few attempts from Jamie Vardy, Leicester posed little threat and Van Nistelrooy admitted that individual mistakes cost them. He emphasized the need to address defensive issues as they aim to avoid the relegation zone over the festive period.
