Albania FA Fined by UEFA for Security Breaches and Messages

Albania forward Mirlind Daku has been suspended for two matches after leading his country’s fans in derogatory chants following Albania’s contentious 2-2 draw with Croatia in Hamburg. Additionally, the Albania Football Association has been fined £21,250 (25,000 euros) by UEFA for transmitting provocative messages unsuitable for a sports event. They face an additional charge of £19,000 (22,500 euros) for pitch invasions and the lighting of fireworks by supporters. UEFA has imposed this penalty to address breaches of stadium security and safety regulations during the match.

The Croatian Federation has been fined £23,600 (28,000 euros) for incidents involving the throwing and lighting of fireworks. UEFA has initiated an investigation into potential instances of racist and/or discriminatory behavior by supporters during the match. The inquiry aims to ascertain the extent of any such conduct and enforce appropriate disciplinary measures if found substantiated.

Daku issued an apology on social media on Friday. Meanwhile, the threat of Serbia withdrawing from Euro 2024 loomed over chants between Croatian and Albanian fans. Despite this, Serbia played their match against Slovenia a few hours later, ending in a 1-1 draw. Daku’s actions have prompted the North Macedonia football federation to demand that he issue an apology. They seek acknowledgment and remorse for the impact of his behavior on regional sporting relations.
