Austria Stuns Netherlands to Top Group D

Austria delivered an outstanding performance at Euro 2024, defeating the Netherlands to progress to the last 16 as Group D winners. Despite facing tough opponents like the Dutch and France, Ralf Rangnick’s side won two of their three games and finished top of the standings. The Netherlands secured a last-16 spot as a top third-placed team with France finishing second. Austria deserved their win, showcasing spirit and determination, with Sabitzer’s decisive strike countering the Netherlands’ strong second half.

Austria took an early lead in the sixth minute when Donyell Malen inadvertently turned in Alexander Prass’s dangerous cross. Malen had a chance to redeem himself but missed the opportunity, allowing Austria to dominate possession. Rangnick’s team created further chances through Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic but failed to capitalize. The Netherlands equalized just 75 seconds into the second half with Cody Gakpo curling in a fantastic finish. The Dutch gained momentum and put pressure on Austria as Virgil van Dijk’s header narrowly missed.

However, Austria regained the lead through Romano Schmid’s powerful header, which the unfortunate Stefan de Vrij deflected. Memphis Depay appeared to secure a draw for the Dutch with his close-range volley but Sabitzer had the final word. He broke through and drove the ball into the roof of the net, sending Austrian fans into a frenzy. Austria now emerges as a team to watch at Euro 2024. Despite being considered a surprise package, their form leading up to the tournament indicated they were a force to be reckoned with.

Austria, winning five of six games, outplayed the Netherlands with tempo and precision. The Netherlands managed to fight back twice but lacked Austria’s hunger and desire. At the final whistle, Austrian fans stayed to applaud their team, showcasing a unity that could take them far in the tournament. For the Netherlands, this game marked 36 years since their European Championship victory. They will need to improve significantly to replicate that success. Already qualified, the Netherlands lacked Austria’s drive, except for a brief spell after halftime.

Coach Ronald Koeman can take solace in Depay’s goal, a much-needed boost for the striker who had struggled in previous matches.
