Barnabas Varga, Hungary forward is recovering at home in Hungary after doctors discharged him from a Stuttgart hospital where he underwent successful surgery for a fractured cheekbone suffered in a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during a Euro 2024 Group A match last Sunday in Stuttgart.

Varga, 29, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating on Ferencvaros’ website, “Thank you for the many messages of support. It’s good to be home again.” He added, “Now I will take a few weeks to rest, and then focus on my recovery. I’ve already reviewed the incident, and I’m not the type to dwell on it nervously.”

The Hungarian Football Federation stated, “We discharged Barnabas Varga from the hospital in Stuttgart this morning, and he is currently recovering at home in Hungary.” During Sunday’s match, which Hungary won 1-0, medical staff attended to Varga for nearly seven minutes in the second half as play was halted.

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai showed visible emotion on the field and later criticized the response time of the medical staff. However, UEFA responded, stating there was “no delay” in the treatment provided to Varga at the Stuttgart Arena.

Following the incident, Hungary manager Marco Rossi, along with his coaching staff and full-back Endre Botka, visited Varga on Monday.
