Donyell Malen scored twice and Cody Gakpo netted his third goal of Euro 2024, propelling the Netherlands to a 3-0 victory over a spirited Romania and into the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years. Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring midway through the first half with a brilliant finish, cutting inside and driving the ball into the bottom corner. Despite missing numerous chances afterward, the Netherlands secured the win late on when Malen, who came on at half-time, scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

Donyell Malen first stabbed in from Gakpo’s ball and then charged forward to slot home, capitalizing on Romania’s forward push. Romania started energetically, pressing the Netherlands and creating early chances, including a fizzing shot from Dennis Man. However, Gakpo’s goal shifted the game’s momentum, and the Netherlands had opportunities to extend their lead, with Xavi Simons firing wide and Virgil van Dijk hitting the post. The Netherlands’ improved performance was a relief after their shaky 3-2 defeat by Austria in the group stage.

They attacked with pace and precision, though missed chances remain a concern against stronger opponents. Dutch fans, initially quiet, were reinvigorated by Gakpo’s goal and the team’s high-tempo style. Romania, reaching the knockout stages for the first time in 24 years, impressed their fans with a strong start and relentless pressing. Despite the defeat, the Romanian supporters stayed behind to applaud their team’s efforts, creating a vibrant atmosphere at Allianz Arena.
