England’s Euro 2024 Heartbreak: Southgate’s Future in Question

England’s quest to end their 58-year trophy drought came to a disappointing end in the Euro 2024 final against Spain in Berlin. Despite rallying from behind for the fourth consecutive game, they fell short as Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal sealed Spain’s 2-1 victory. This defeat marks England’s second consecutive loss in the European Championship final, with their sole major trophy remaining the 1966 World Cup.

Manager Gareth Southgate, whose contract expires at year-end, faces uncertainty about his future after eight years in charge. England’s journey in Euro 2024 was tumultuous, marked by criticism early on and near elimination stages against Denmark and Slovenia. However, tactical adjustments and resilient performances, including dramatic wins against Slovakia and the Netherlands, buoyed hopes before the final.

Individual performances stood out amidst the disappointment. Cole Palmer joined a select group by scoring in the final while Harry Kane continued to shine with three goals, reinforcing his status as England’s top scorer. Jude Bellingham’s crucial goals added to his stellar season, highlighted by successes in the Champions League and La Liga with Real Madrid.

As England returns home without the trophy, attention turns to Southgate’s future and the team’s upcoming Nations League fixtures. The manager remains non-committal about his continuation, preferring to consult before making a decision. England’s immediate focus shifts to September’s Nations League games against Ireland and Finland, as they aim to regroup following their European campaign.
