England's loss to Iceland in their final warm-up before Euro 2024 raised serious concerns that remain unresolved.
England’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024 is under scrutiny as the inquest continues with BBC Sport pundits Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas and Alan Shearer, joined by Gary Lineker dissecting the performance.
England appeared tactically inferior to Denmark, registering fewer shots, shots on target, and touches in the opposition’s box. Consequently, the team faced criticism for their negative approach and lack of pressing. Rooney remarked, “It was a flat performance with no energy or balance. The players must take responsibility, especially if Harry Kane admitted he was unsure what to do after the game.” Similarly, Fabregas added, “I’m still trying to understand their game plan. Spain has a clear, aggressive plan.
England’s team varies too much and lacks confidence going forward. Harry Kane no longer has the legs to press high, and that disrupts the entire team’s function.” Shearer also commented, “With our world-class players, it’s the manager’s job to get the best out of them. We saw it for 35 minutes in the first game but since then, no. There’s no plan and a complete lack of energy. The players don’t know whether to press or sit.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s unconventional role in central midfield hasn’t been successful. Rooney suggested, “Bellingham should play deeper, giving Foden more freedom. Additionally, I’d like to see Anthony Gordon in there. While I love Alexander-Arnold, there are better midfield options.” Shearer added, “Gareth Southgate is meticulous, but his comments on Kalvin Phillips surprised me. Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo could be options. The Trent experiment hasn’t worked and needs to change.”
Shearer attributed the players’ confusion to the manager, stating, “They look unsure about when to press, which reflects on the manager. Furthermore, the opposition has found it too easy in the last two games.” Fabregas agreed, “Every team needs a game plan. If the striker doesn’t know what to do, that’s a problem.” Meanwhile, Rooney defended the coaching staff, saying, “I’m sure Gareth and Steve Holland are working on a game plan. Gareth now has a chance to reassess and make changes to get us back on the front foot.”
England’s defeat by Iceland in their final warm-up game raised concerns that have persisted. Moreover, Southgate’s admission that using Alexander-Arnold in midfield was an “experiment” hasn’t helped. Fabregas emphasized the importance of detailed planning, “Successful coaches go into the detail. Denmark looked like a proper team with a clear game plan. Without detailed planning, you can’t succeed.” Rooney added, “You can’t enter a major tournament experimenting. Southgate might regret that if England doesn’t progress far.”
Jordan Henderson’s omission from the squad, despite his extensive experience, has been questioned. Rooney noted, “There’s a lack of experience and vocal leadership. I would’ve taken Henderson for his voice. Young players need guidance, especially after taking the lead.” Shearer concurred, “After scoring in both games, we automatically sat back, showing a lack of experience.”
