France Beat Portugal in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

France reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after defeating Portugal in a penalty shootout in Hamburg. Theo Hernandez scored the decisive penalty after substitute Joao Felix hit the post, the only miss in the shootout. Portugal, who had beaten Slovenia in a shootout five days earlier, were left deflated as France celebrated with their fans. This match marked the end of an era for Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who confirmed it would be his last Euros.

Despite pre-match hype around Ronaldo and France’s Kylian Mbappe, neither had a significant impact. Ronaldo scored his penalty, but Mbappe, wearing a mask due to a broken nose, was substituted in extra time after taking a hit to the face and couldn’t participate in the shootout. The match itself was cagey, with few chances. Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha were denied by France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

France’s Randal Kolo Muani had a shot deflected wide and Eduardo Camavinga missed a close-range effort. In extra time, Ronaldo missed a crucial chance, sending a shot over the bar. France will now face Spain in the semi-finals in Munich. Mbappe’s discomfort with his mask was evident, and he was substituted after struggling to make an impact. France manager Didier Deschamps acknowledged Mbappe’s efforts despite his condition.

Without Mbappe’s creativity, France relied on Portugal’s defensive lapses for opportunities. Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa, hero of their last-16 win, couldn’t replicate his success. Ronaldo struggled to influence the game, and Rafael Leao was Portugal’s main threat. Manager Roberto Martinez faced criticism for his team selection, especially for not using attacking options like Diogo Jota and Goncalo Ramos.

Despite solid defensive performances, Portugal couldn’t break through and exited the tournament.
