Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer Stand Firm on Kane Critique

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have stood by their critique of Harry Kane and England’s performance following their 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024. The Three Lions’ captain responded to the former England internationals turned pundits, suggesting they should remember the experience of wearing the national shirt before criticizing Gareth Southgate’s team. Kane, along with several teammates, faced scrutiny for their display in a match that left England with four points after two Group C games.

Lineker and Shearer dissected the game on BBC’s coverage, with Gary Lineker later using strong language on his Rest is Football podcast to describe the team’s performance. During the podcast discussion, Lineker accused journalists of deliberately provoking controversy, while Shearer advocated for England’s response to be demonstrated on the field rather than in media criticism.

“We’ve been critical of England’s performances, as have almost all journalists, but this is how it goes,” Lineker commented. “We’ve talked about this before, how journalists often avoid asking the tough questions themselves. I bet the person who asked that question was probably critical themselves. They do it to stir things up and because they’re not brave enough to ask their own questions.”

Lineker acknowledged Kane’s response, noting, “He handled it well. There was a moment where he mentioned that as ex-England players, we have responsibilities and should know better, despite never having won anything or words to that effect. He’s right, but our intention is not to be negative and critical. We want the England team to perform well. The best punditry is when England plays well.”

Shearer added, “It’s crucial we avoid making it personal. That’s the most important thing. They were poor, and we have to say that. If England had been exceptional, we would have said so. That’s how it goes. As players, you always have the opportunity to respond on the pitch. I stand by what we said. England was really poor. I think most of the country, and even the players themselves, would agree they were dreadful against Denmark. There were very few positives.”

England’s next challenge is against Slovenia in their final Group C match in Cologne on Tuesday at 20:00 BST.
