Georgia made history by reaching their first major tournament knockout stage with a victory over Portugal at Euro 2024. Portugal, having already won their group, experienced shock within the first two minutes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa. This early goal set the tone for the rest of the match, as Georgia capitalized on a counterattack after regaining possession. Despite not dominating possession, Georgia made their chances count.

Georges Mikautadze scored from the penalty spot in the second half, solidifying Georgia’s unexpected triumph. Georgia’s strategy involved allowing Portugal to control possession while they maintained a strong defense and closed down spaces. They patiently waited for counterattacking opportunities. Portugal created few real chances while Georgia’s disciplined shape frustrated the Group F winners. Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to make an impact in the final third due to a lack of service, and Portugal’s midfielders failed to convert their possession into effective attacks.

Georgia ended their group stage campaign in impressive fashion. This victory over Portugal ranks as the biggest upset in Euros history based on FIFA rankings, marking a memorable night in Georgia’s debut major tournament. Georgia will now face Spain in the last 16 while Portugal will take on Slovenia. Georgia, known for averaging the lowest possession in Euro qualifying, executed their game plan effectively against Portugal. Despite their lack of possession, they achieved their goal in style.

Kvaratskhelia, who had previously struggled in Germany, stepped up to the challenge, scoring early after capitalizing on a misplaced Antonio Silva pass. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili enjoyed a relatively quiet night as Portugal struggled to create significant opportunities. Ronaldo’s efforts were limited, with a long-range free-kick and a deflected shot being his most notable contributions. He left the field in frustration in the second half. For Georgia’s young players, it was a night to shine.

Mikautadze, 23, scored in each of the group-stage games and with Kvaratskhelia now performing, they look to continue making history in their challenging match against Spain.
