Harry Kane has called on former England internationals turned pundits to empathize with current players before criticizing Gareth Southgate’s team. After scrutiny from pundits, Kane highlighted the challenges of playing in major tournaments after England’s draw with Denmark. “I wouldn’t want to disrespect any player, especially those who have worn the England shirt and understand what it means,” Kane remarked on television. “But ex-players-turned-pundits must recognize how difficult it is for current players, particularly those new to the environment.”
Kane stressed the weight of responsibility that comes with being a former Three Lions player whose opinions resonate widely among football fans. “They have to be honest and offer their opinions, but they also bear responsibility as figures players look up to,” Kane explained. “Many haven’t experienced winning trophies for England in a long time, so they know firsthand the challenges we face. It’s not about criticism, it’s acknowledging the toughness of major tournaments and playing for England.”
The Bayern Munich striker suggested that pundits could better serve the team by boosting confidence rather than scrutinizing performances. Harry Kane, who scored England’s goal against Denmark before being substituted, also addressed concerns about his fitness levels. Manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged the team’s physical limitations, stating they weren’t able to press opponents as desired. Despite personal and team challenges, Kane remains composed and focused on improvement.
Looking ahead to their match against Slovenia, Kane acknowledged the importance of securing a top finish in Group C to carry momentum into the knockout stages. Reflecting on England’s progress, Kane acknowledged there’s room for improvement despite positive results. “We haven’t played our best yet, but we’ve managed to get results,” Kane admitted. “Tuesday’s game is crucial for our group’s morale. We aim to finish top, build momentum and ensure a better feeling as we progress in the tournament.”
England, currently in control of their group, will advance to the last 16 with a favorable result against Slovenia, regardless of other outcomes. Kane affirmed that such a scenario was acceptable before the tournament began. “We anticipated this situation,” Kane concluded. “Despite our performances, we are focused on achieving our best in the upcoming matches and carrying forward a positive spirit.”
