Hungary Striker Varga ‘Stable’ After Collision, Set for Surgery

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is “stable” in hospital after being stretchered off following a mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday’s Euro 2024 match. Varga suffered a fractured cheekbone and will undergo surgery, Hungary manager Marco Rossi told BBC Sport.

“Varga is okay,” Rossi said. “Unfortunately, he will need an operation due to the fracture. If we progress in the tournament, he certainly won’t be with us.”

In his post-match news conference, Rossi assured that Varga was “healthy” and “not under any kind of risk.” The match was delayed for nearly seven minutes as Varga received extensive treatment on the pitch.

“The Hungarian national team player is currently in a Stuttgart hospital,” the Hungarian Football Federation posted on X. “We will provide updates on his status as soon as we have any news.”

Sheets were held around Varga, 29, as he received treatment on the field before being taken to the hospital. Hungary’s players quickly signaled that he needed urgent help, assisting in bringing on the stretcher and gathering around their teammate.

Rossi mentioned that the players were “worried” about Varga’s condition. He added, “From what I heard, it looked like he was not conscious, so everyone was really concerned. The doctors arrived a bit late, but probably they didn’t realize it was a serious situation.”
