Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz Propel Germany to Quarter-Finals

Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz scored as Euro 2024 hosts Germany advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Denmark in a match disrupted by a spectacular storm. Lightning and heavy rain suspended the last-16 clash at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion for about 20 minutes. The interruption occurred near the end of the first half. The game featured several notable video assistant referee (VAR) calls.

VAR disallowed Nico Schlotterbeck’s early header and Denmark’s Joachim Andersen saw his second-half goal overturned for offside against teammate Thomas Delaney. Shortly after, referee Michael Oliver reviewed a handball by Andersen and awarded Germany a penalty. Havertz coolly converted the spot-kick past Kasper Schmeichel. The goal delighted the home fans.

Kai Havertz missed a chance to double his tally shortly after but Germany secured their decisive second goal with just over 20 minutes remaining. Jamal Musiala raced through on the left and slotted into the far corner, ensuring Germany’s progression. The home fans celebrated passionately at the final whistle. Germany will next face the winner of Sunday’s match between Spain, who have been impressive, and surprise package Georgia.

The quarter-final is scheduled for Friday, July 5. The match’s dramatic elements will be remembered, showcasing why Germany is a strong contender to lift the trophy on home soil. They now top the tournament’s scoring charts with 10 goals. Schmeichel denied both Havertz and Florian Wirtz late in the game. The epic storm and rollercoaster of VAR decisions added to the drama but Germany’s attacking trio of Musiala, Wirtz, and Havertz proved decisive.

Despite some defensive concerns, Germany’s offensive strength secured their victory as Denmark exited Euro 2024 without a win.
