Jan Vertonghen Own Goal Sends France to Euro 2024 Quarters

Jan Vertonghen’s late own goal sealed a 1-0 victory for France over Belgium at Dusseldorf Arena, securing their spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. The match, largely devoid of quality and excitement, appeared headed for extra time until Randal Kolo Muani’s shot deflected off Jan Vertonghen with five minutes remaining. Throughout the game, France struggled with their finishing, missing several chances despite dominating possession.

Kylian Mbappe, usually clinical, was among those guilty of squandering opportunities, including a few wide shots. Belgium’s best chance came from Kevin de Bruyne, whose late effort was saved by Mike Maignan. France, managed by Didier Deschamps, managed just one shot on target in the first half and finished with 19 shots overall, but only two on target.

Their inability to convert chances into goals remains a concern as they progress to face Portugal in the quarter-finals. Belgium, meanwhile, disappointed their supporters once more with a cautious approach that yielded few threatening moments. Romelu Lukaku, their star forward, failed to score throughout the tournament, epitomizing their struggles in attack.

The team exits Euro 2024 reflecting on whether this tournament was a missed opportunity for their ‘golden generation’, with key players like De Bruyne and Lukaku now in their thirties. Both teams now face different prospects as France must improve their efficiency in front of goal, while Belgium reflects on the future of their talented but aging squad following another disappointing exit.
