Lionesses Secure Euro 2025 Qualification

Lionesses secured automatic qualification for Euro 2025 in Switzerland after a tense draw against Sweden. Needing only a point, England controlled possession early but struggled to test Sweden’s goalkeeper in the first half. Alessia Russo came close for England, while Sweden had their chances with Hanna Lundkvist and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd missing narrowly.

In the second half, Sweden pressed for a win, increasing pressure on goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who faced challenges dealing with crosses. England, despite needing just a draw, found themselves under duress as errors crept into their play. The match ended nervously with England securing their spot in the tournament, finishing second in League A3 while Sweden now faces playoffs.

Manager Sarina Wiegman expressed relief at avoiding playoffs but acknowledged the team’s need to improve after a tense qualification campaign. England’s defense faced scrutiny, with Hampton starting over regular goalkeeper Mary Earps, showcasing the competition for the number one spot. Looking ahead, Wiegman emphasized the need for improvement before Euro 2025, recognizing the challenges posed by their tough qualification group.

Sweden, despite their efforts, now faces a complex playoff path to secure their place. The draw for the tournament will take place soon where England will discover their group-stage opponents. Despite the qualification, celebrations among the Lionesses were tempered by the awareness of the team’s shaky performance and the need for significant improvement ahead of defending their title in Switzerland next year.
