Luke Shaw, England’s sole specialist left-back in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, is eager to contribute fully after recovering from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for England’s initial matches. Having made a substitute appearance in the quarter-final win against Switzerland, Shaw feels prepared to handle a full 90 minutes if selected.

“I believe I am fit and ready to play a full match,” Shaw stated. “Ultimately, it’s up to Gareth to decide. I feel physically prepared and eager to contribute.”

Shaw’s return to action against Switzerland marked his first competitive outing since sustaining his injury in February. His recovery took longer than anticipated, with Kieran Trippier filling in at left-back during Shaw’s absence.

Reflecting on his injury journey, Shaw acknowledged the challenges of the past few months. “It’s been a tough four months,” he admitted. “Initially, I was expected to return sooner, but setbacks prolonged my recovery.”

Regarding England’s performance in Euro 2024, Shaw described his experience from the sidelines as “strange” and “difficult,” emphasizing his motivation to return to playing and help the team succeed. He expressed gratitude to Gareth Southgate, assistant manager Steve Holland, and the medical staff for their support during his rehabilitation.

Despite England’s less than perfect performances in the tournament, including draws in group matches and deficits in knockout games, Shaw remains confident in the team’s progress. He highlighted memorable moments like Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka’s crucial goals as signs of improvement.

Shaw also defended Southgate against criticism, praising the manager for his leadership and achievements. “I don’t understand the criticism of Gareth,” Shaw remarked. “He has elevated us as a team and as individuals. His trust in us has been crucial.”

Looking ahead, Luke Shaw aims to make a big impact in England’s Euro 2024 journey, aiming for success. He determines to contribute both defensively and offensively to aid England in their quest to advance further and achieve their goals on the international stage.
