Niclas Fullkrug’s Heroics Deny Swiss, Germany Tops Group

Niclas Fullkrug’s late equalizer for Germany secured a draw with Switzerland, allowing them to top Group A at Euro 2024. Switzerland had led early through Dan Ndoye’s goal and seemed poised to advance as group winners until Fullkrug’s header changed the game’s outcome. Despite defending resolutely for over 90 minutes, Switzerland still progressed to the knockout stages. Germany’s manager, Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged the risk of conceding a second goal but felt the draw was well-deserved. He noted the challenge of scoring against Switzerland’s strong defense.

Murat Yakin’s Swiss side needed a win to overtake Germany but ultimately succumbed to late pressure. Switzerland’s fans had celebrated Ndoye’s early goal but the team’s second-half efforts, including a disallowed goal for offside, weren’t enough. Germany’s Robert Andrich also had a goal overturned by VAR for a foul in the buildup. Germany lacked the sharpness of their previous victories but managed to create several late chances. Niclas Fullkrug’s equalizer kept their unbeaten record intact ensuring they face the runner-up of England’s group next.

Nagelsmann’s unchanged lineup seemed to struggle with energy and creativity, making it easy for Switzerland to execute their game plan. Ndoye’s goal against the run of play boosted Swiss confidence and they began threatening on the break as Germany grew frustrated. The German side’s persistence paid off with Fullkrug’s goal, highlighting the importance of impactful substitutes. Nagelsmann praised Fullkrug’s ability to change games, whether starting or coming off the bench.

While this performance may humble Germany, they remain favorites to win the tournament, showing resilience to secure a crucial goal. Switzerland continues to progress under Yakin, advancing from the group stage in their past three Euros appearances. Yakin expressed pride in his team’s performance despite missing out on a win, highlighting their ability to handle pressure and posing a threat to future opponents.
