Switzerland’s impressive performance secured a potential quarter-final clash with England as defending champions Italy exited Euro 2024 in disappointing fashion. Switzerland dominated from the outset, taking a deserved lead when Ruben Vargas assisted Remo Freuler, who scored with a powerful low shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Vargas extended the lead to 2-0 just 27 seconds into the second half with a superbly bent shot into the top corner. Italy struggled to create chances, managing their first shot on target in the 73rd minute.

Their best opportunity came when Fabian Schar inadvertently hit Nicolo Fagioli’s cross against the post. Despite late efforts, including Gianluca Scamacca hitting the woodwork, Italy failed to mount a comeback, ending their lackluster campaign in Germany on a sour note. Switzerland’s bolstered by enthusiastic supporters in Berlin, demonstrated their quality with incisive passing and effective flanking play.

Murat Yakin’s team demonstrated resilience and organization throughout, securing a comfortable victory and advancing to their second consecutive Euro quarter-final after a penalty shootout loss to Spain in the previous edition.

In contrast, Italy’s fans left early, disillusioned by their team’s underwhelming performance. Manager Luciano Spalletti, who made significant changes in personnel and tactics, could not inspire a turnaround, leaving little room for optimism after their disappointing exit from the tournament.
