The Netherlands staged a comeback to defeat Turkey and secure a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals against England. Despite Turkey taking the lead through Samet Akaydin’s header, the Dutch equalized with Stefan de Vrij’s header after halftime. An own goal by Mert Muldur under pressure from Cody Gakpo sealed Turkey’s fate, as they missed chances despite early dominance. Ronald Koeman’s side struggled initially but turned the tide after halftime, spurred by substitute Wout Weghorst’s impactful performance. His presence in the box and defensive contributions shifted momentum in favor of the Netherlands.

Turkey, buoyed by their first-half lead and supported by passionate fans, couldn’t capitalize on opportunities, including a near miss from Arda Guler’s free-kick hitting the post. The Netherlands now face England in the semi-finals after Gareth Southgate’s team advanced past Switzerland on penalties. Koeman’s tactical adjustments, including Weghorst’s substitution, proved pivotal in their quarter-final victory, highlighting their resilience. For Turkey, despite a commendable tournament run, particularly their win over Austria in the last 16, their inability to convert chances cost them a shot at a semi-final berth.

Akaydin’s emotional celebration and Turkey’s spirited play were overshadowed by missed opportunities, ending their Euro 2024 campaign on a bittersweet note. As the tournament progresses, both the Netherlands and England will look to build on their strengths and address tactical challenges in pursuit of a place in the final against either France or Spain.
