UEFA has handed Jude Bellingham a one-match suspended ban and fined him £25,400 (30,000 Euros) for his controversial gesture during England’s last-16 victory over Slovakia in Euro 2024. Despite this, he will take the field in England’s quarter-final against Switzerland. The 21-year-old midfielder directed a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench, prompting an investigation by UEFA. However, Bellingham clarified that he aimed the gesture as an inside joke at friends in the crowd, not as disrespect to Slovakia.
In response to this decision, England manager Gareth Southgate has expressed his support, describing it as a sensible outcome given the circumstances. Transitioning to his on-field performance, Bellingham has scored two crucial goals for England in Euro 2024, including a dramatic equalizer against Slovakia. He took to social media to express relief over the resolution of his case. Meanwhile, due to disturbances caused by England supporters, including the lighting of fireworks during matches, the Football Association has had to pay a fine of £9,310 (11,000 euros).
In a separate incident, UEFA delivered a two-match ban to Turkey’s Merih Demiral for making a ‘wolf salute’ gesture after scoring against Austria. The gesture, associated with a controversial group, triggered the ban despite Demiral’s significant role in Turkey’s 2-1 victory. Next up, England is gearing up to face Switzerland in Dusseldorf. With Bellingham available to play, the team’s confidence is on the rise. The match, set for 17:00 BST and to be broadcast live on BBC platforms, holds great importance for England’s Euro 2024 campaign.
Concurrently, Turkey will be squaring off against the Netherlands in Berlin. However, their defense will suffer a significant blow as Demiral won’t be part of the lineup due to his suspension.
