Yan Dhanda’s Late Header Rescues Hearts in Minsk

Yan Dhanda’s last-minute header secured a much-needed 1-4 victory for managerless Hearts against Dinamo Minsk, ending a 10-game winless streak. After a challenging start to the season, Hearts found themselves trailing early to Steven Alfred’s opener in Azerbaijan with the match taking place in a neutral venue due to Belarus’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

However, a fortunate own goal by Sergey Politevich leveled the score before Dhanda’s late heroics clinched the win. Hearts, who had traveled 3,300 miles to watch their team struggle saw little creative flair for much of the game with Dinamo allowing them to dominate possession. The Belarusian side struck first as Rai Lopes set up Alfred for a first-time finish that left goalkeeper Craig Gordon with no chance.

The second half saw Dinamo continue to apply pressure but Hearts managed to equalize when Politevich inadvertently headed the ball into his own net from a corner. Despite attempts from Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland to spark a comeback including a close header, the match seemed destined for a draw. In the dying moments, substitute Yan Dhanda capitalized on a cross from Shankland to secure the win.

Hearts’ interim head coach Liam Fox expressed his delight, emphasizing the players’ determination despite the challenging conditions and lack of support. While the team struggled against a beatable opponent, the victory provided a much-needed boost as they prepare for their upcoming match against Aberdeen.

With a permanent manager needed after the international break, Hearts will look to build on this newfound momentum in their quest to turn their season around.
