Rangers Start Strong in Europe, Clement Urges More Ruthlessness

Rangers secured a much-needed Europa League win over Malmo after a turbulent start to the season providing a sense of relief for manager Philippe Clement. Describing the 2-0 victory as the “perfect start” to their campaign, Clement acknowledged it was their best performance so far, though he emphasized the need for more ruthlessness in front of goal.

Clement expressed satisfaction with the summer transfer window, highlighting the club’s wage cuts while bringing in a mix of young talent and experienced players. He believes the squad has the potential to surpass last season’s performance, despite the challenges faced early on. The contributions of recent signings were evident in the win with Nedim Bajrami scoring just 56 seconds into the match.

He impressed with his overall play creating four chances and winning the ball back eight times. Feyenoord loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo made a solid debut at left-back while center-back Robin Propper delivered a convincing defensive display helping limit Malmo to a single shot on goal. However, Rangers’ lack of clinical finishing remains an issue. Kasanwirjo, Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny missed clear chances to put the game beyond doubt.

While Clement is confident the team will improve in this area, former Rangers striker Ally McCoist emphasized the need for sharper finishing especially against stronger opponents. The challenge now is for Rangers to build on this performance. With a tough Europa League schedule ahead including games against Lyon, Tottenham and Manchester United consistency will be key.

As former striker Steven Thompson noted, this win could provide the boost needed to shake off early-season negativity and push the team forward.
