Graham Potter faced defeat in his first match as West Ham’s boss as Aston Villa made a second-half comeback to secure a 3-1 win and reach the FA Cup fourth round. West Ham had taken the lead through Lucas Paqueta’s ninth-minute goal but Villa equalized after a controversial corner decision which led to Amadou Onana’s 71st-minute equalizer. Morgan Rogers soon put Villa ahead to complete the turnaround. Despite the frustration over the incorrect corner decision, West Ham struggled to maintain their first-half momentum.
Potter, appointed just days before the match and with limited preparation had a promising start but saw his side falter in the second half. Adding to Potter’s woes, striker Niclas Fullkrug was forced off with a possible hamstring injury, joining an already depleted squad missing Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio. While the loss was disappointing, there were some positives for Graham Potter to build on including the team’s creative play in the first half.
However, Villa’s relentless pressure eventually wore down West Ham. Despite the poor decision, the Hammers couldn’t cope with Villa’s intensity and the hosts’ dominance in the second half sealed the win. For Villa, this victory marked just their second FA Cup win in nine years, a significant step for Unai Emery’s side, who have struggled in the competition in recent seasons.
Villa has not lifted a trophy since the 1996 League Cup and the FA Cup remains their best chance for silverware this season. Emery’s team, now on a better run with only two losses in the last nine games will hope this victory marks the start of a cup run. Despite not being a spectacular performance, Villa will still be optimistic about their chances in this season’s FA Cup.
