Jack Grealish scored his first goal in over a year, and James McAtee delivered a second-half hat-trick as Manchester City thrashed League Two Salford 8-0 in the FA Cup, achieving their biggest win since 2019. Grealish converted a penalty in the 49th minute after Salford’s defense fouled him. He humorously exchanged words with regular penalty-taker Erling Haaland, who rested during the match. The goal ended Grealish’s drought since December 2023, providing relief after his struggles with form.
Later, he assisted McAtee’s final goal, further contributing to the rout. Jeremy Doku scored City’s second from another penalty while debutant Divin Mubama tapped in Matheus Nunes’ cross for his first senior goal. Nico O’Reilly drilled a low shot into the corner from Doku’s assist to add to the tally. McAtee, who Guardiola had overlooked much of the season, shone with three goals in 19 minutes, capitalizing on assists from Doku, Phil Foden and Grealish.
Pep Guardiola praised McAtee, calling him a “special player” and highlighting his leadership during his academy years. McAtee a lifelong City fan, described the moment as unforgettable. Salford owned by Manchester United’s “Class of 92,” failed to match City’s dominance. Over 5,000 fans turned out but the team couldn’t capitalize on key opportunities including Kylian Kouassi’s missed chance before City extended their lead.
Salford boss Karl Robinson joked about conceding eight goals in one match after allowing just seven in their previous six games combined. City excluded stars like Haaland and Kyle Walker from the squad as Guardiola confirmed Walker’s desire to explore an overseas move. For Jack Grealish, scoring against lower-league opposition might not fully restore his form, but it offers a morale boost. Salford suffered their heaviest loss as a league club, revealing the stark gulf in class.
