Newcastle United extended their winning streak to eight matches in all competitions with a 3-1 victory over League Two side Bromley in the FA Cup. Bromley, playing against Premier League opposition for the first time in their history, shocked the hosts with an early lead. Cameron Congreve scored from just outside the box after Newcastle failed to deal with a long delivery. However, Newcastle quickly responded with a brilliant strike from Lewis Miley, who fired a 25-yard effort into the bottom corner to level the score.
The Magpies took the lead early in the second half when substitute Anthony Gordon converted a penalty after Matt Targett fouled him. Newcastle sealed the win with William Osula’s first goal for the club as he ran down the right, cut inside and fired a powerful shot into the far corner. Despite the loss, Bromley managed by former Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, impressed with their performance.
The London club, in their first season in the Football League and their deepest run in the FA Cup, could have taken a 2-0 lead had Danny Imray not missed a chance before Newcastle equalized. Woodman expressed pride in his team’s effort, calling the defeat a “good way to be beaten.” For Newcastle, the victory was crucial especially as manager Eddie Howe made nine changes from their recent Carabao Cup match.
Despite a slow start, the Magpies regained control after Miley’s stunning goal. Howe introduced Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes to add quality and Gordon’s penalty and Osula’s goal secured the win. Newcastle United could have won by a larger margin with Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron also coming close. The match also saw 17-year-old winger Trevan Sanusi make his debut.
