Craig Bellamy secured his first win as Wales head coach in a dramatic Nations League match against Montenegro, played in torrential rain in Niksic. Kieffer Moore gave Wales a dream start with a goal just 37 seconds in, followed by a stunning 25-yard strike from Harry Wilson two minutes later, putting the visitors 2-0 up early on. The heavy rain made the match chaotic with the pitch deteriorating and both teams having numerous chances.
The game turned into a frenetic, end-to-end contest as conditions worsened. Montenegro nearly responded when captain Stevan Jovetic’s audacious long-range effort hit the crossbar and Driton Camaj was denied by a last-ditch block from Ben Davies. Wales also had a golden opportunity to extend their lead but Moore missed from close range.
Montenegro continued to push with Vladimir Jovovic hitting the post before Camaj finally scored with a tap-in after 73 minutes, setting up a nervy finish. Despite the challenging conditions and Montenegro’s late pressure, Wales held on to claim a 2-1 victory. This result leaves Wales with four points from their opening two matches in Group B4, level with Turkey at the top.
Craig Bellamy’s side impressed again with their high-energy, attacking style which had also been on display in their previous 0-0 draw against Turkey. In this match, Wales’ tactical fluidity and aggressive pressing were evident from the start, helping them secure an early advantage. However, as the rain worsened playing conditions became difficult, turning the game into a physical battle.
Though Montenegro threatened late on, Wales’ defense stood firm and Bellamy’s team earned a hard-fought victory in challenging circumstances.
