Lauren James Out of Euro 2025 Qualifiers with Foot Injury

Lauren James, a foot injury will sideline her for England’s Euro 2025 qualifiers against France. Despite training on Thursday, the 22-year-old was deemed unfit due to a pre-existing injury, leading to Tottenham’s Jessica Naz being called up as her replacement from the standby list. Sarina Wiegman disappointed over James’ absence; efforts made for her readiness but it’s too early to join. Wiegman acknowledged Naz’s readiness and performance in training, emphasizing the need to move forward.

The upcoming fixture at St James’ Park kicks off consecutive matches against group leaders France, ranked third globally. Lauren James will also miss the subsequent game in Saint-Etienne. Additionally, Wiegman faced setbacks with injuries to defenders Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy but she can now field center-backs Leah Williamson and Millie Bright together for the first time since February 2023.

Wiegman praised the competition within the team, highlighting the quality and depth of the squad. England’s captain, Leah Williamson, responded to France coach Herve Renard’s suggestion that England are favorites.  She acknowledged their status as the reigning European champions but emphasized the evenness of the matchup. Williamson welcomed the challenge posed by France’s formidable squad which includes several Lyon players who featured in the recent Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona.

France midfielder Kenza Dali emphasized the importance of securing victory to maintain their position atop the group.  She downplayed the significance of a potential win as a statement and credited her improved performance to the trust placed in her by Renard. Dali also highlighted the collective effort of the team. Renard expressed admiration for the intensity and atmosphere of English football, recalling his time in Cambridge and the enthusiasm for the local team.

Despite acknowledging England’s status as favorites, Renard emphasized France’s competitiveness and expressed eagerness for a challenging match at St James’ Park.
