Tottenham Spurs Unity Amidst Apology for Racial Slur
Tottenham forward Son Heung-min has addressed an incident involving his teammate Rodrigo Bentancur, who apologized after making a racial slur during an appearance on Uruguayan TV. Bentancur, when asked for a Tottenham shirt, responded with a comment implying all individuals of Son’s ethnicity look alike.
Son stated, “I’ve spoken to Lolo. He made a mistake, knows it, and has apologized. I believe Lolo did not intend to offend anyone intentionally. We remain close like brothers, and our unity remains unchanged. We look forward to reuniting in preseason and fighting together for our club.”
Following the incident, anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out received numerous complaints, highlighting broader issues affecting East Asian and other communities. Tottenham confirmed they are actively involved in resolving the matter and are committed to further educating players in line with their diversity, equality, and inclusion goals.
A statement from Tottenham emphasized their support for Son and their diverse fanbase, affirming a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination in any form, both within the club and society at large. They expressed pride in their global squad and fan support, stressing the importance of unity and respect among players and supporters alike.
The club aims to move forward positively as they prepare for the upcoming season.
