Alex Morgan a two-time Women’s World Cup winner and Olympic gold medalist with the United States has announced her retirement from professional football. Morgan, 35, shared the news on social media, revealing that she is also expecting her second child. Her final match will be for San Diego Wave on Sunday against North Carolina Courage. Morgan one of the world’s most renowned female footballers, played a pivotal role in securing equal pay for the USA women’s team in 2022 after the squad filed a lawsuit.
Reflecting on her career, Morgan expressed pride in the lasting impact she’s made for future generations of female footballers. “It’s been a long time coming, and this decision wasn’t easy,” she said. “At the beginning of 2024, I knew this would be my last season. Soccer has been part of me for 30 years, and I gave everything to this sport. What I got in return was more than I could ever have dreamed of.”
Morgan’s illustrious career includes lifting the World Cup in 2015 and 2019, winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and earning bronze at Tokyo 2020. She briefly played for Tottenham in 2020 after giving birth to her daughter, Charlie but returned to the US after four appearances in London. Former San Diego Wave manager Casey Stoney, who coached Alex Morgan until June praised her professionalism and influence.
“The game loses a great with her retirement,” Stoney wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding, “You drove everyone around you to be better and challenged the status quo daily.” Morgan’s decision to retire comes with “so much clarity,” as she looks back on a career that has inspired many and left an indelible mark on women’s football.
