Alisson Becker: From Family Legacy to Liverpool Star

Alisson Becker, Liverpool and Brazil’s star goalkeeper comes from a long line of goalkeepers. His mother, Magali Lino de Souza Becker played as a handball goalkeeper in school while his late father, Jose Agostinho Becker guarded the goal for his work team. Even Alisson’s great-grandfather and older brother, Muriel took up the goalkeeper role, making it almost inevitable that Alisson would follow in their footsteps.

Although Muriel tried to steer him away from the position due to its challenges, Alisson drew inspiration from watching him play and decided to become a goalkeeper. Alisson began his football journey at Internacional in Brazil where he played alongside Muriel. He considers his brother his biggest inspiration along with legendary goalkeepers Claudio Taffarel, Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer.

After joining Liverpool in 2018, Alisson began working with Taffarel, who now serves as the club’s goalkeeping coach. Alisson values their close relationship, often describing Taffarel as both a role model and a friend. Throughout his time at Liverpool, Alisson has won major honors, including the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. He credits his Christian faith and relentless work ethic for his success.

Alisson says his motivation comes from within, not merely from winning trophies. He focuses on his positioning, game reading and one-on-one skills which have cemented him as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers. Since 2018, he has kept 89 clean sheets and prevented more goals than any other Premier League keeper. Now, under the guidance of new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, Alisson stays fully committed to the club.

Alisson Becker fully embraces the club’s new direction and leadership with enthusiasm. Moreover, he rejected a summer move to Saudi Arabia reaffirming his commitment to Liverpool and its younger players. Confident the team is progressing, he remains focused on continuous improvement.
