Amandine Henry Retires from International Football

Amandine Henry former France captain has announced her retirement from international football effective immediately. The 35-year-old midfielder earned 109 caps and scored 14 goals during her illustrious career. Most recently, she played for France in the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics. In a heartfelt post on X, Henry reflected on her journey, stating, “After many years of passion, challenges and unforgettable memories, it is time for me to turn the page.”

Henry captained the French national team from 2017 to 2020 but she was removed from her position by then-manager Corinne Diacre. Although she was part of the squad for the 2023 World Cup, she had to withdraw due to a calf injury. After a three-year absence, Henry made her return to the national team in September 2023 often filling in for the current captain, Wendie Renard.

Currently playing for Toluca in Mexico, Henry enjoyed a highly successful club career with Lyon where she won an impressive seven Champions League titles and 13 French league titles during her two stints from 2007 to 2023. Expressing her gratitude, Henry said, “Wearing the colours of my country these past years has been the honour of my life and has allowed me to experience extraordinary emotions.”

Her retirement marks the end of an era for the French national team as Amandine Henry was a pivotal figure in women’s football contributing significantly both on and off the pitch. As she turns the page on her international career, her legacy as a talented player and leader will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
