Andrés Iniesta, Spain’s World Cup-winning legend has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. Widely celebrated as one of the greatest players in history, Iniesta formed iconic midfield partnerships with Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets for both Spain and Barcelona. Over his international career, he earned 131 caps, scoring the decisive goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final and securing European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012.

During an emotional event in Barcelona, Iniesta reflected on his career, stating, “Being on the pitch is over,” but emphasized his enduring passion for football and plans to pursue coaching. He shared, “These tears are not of sadness but of pride,” reminiscing about his journey from Fuentealbilla where he dreamed of being a footballer. Iniesta spent the majority of his illustrious 22-year career at Barcelona, debuting in 2002 and winning an impressive 29 trophies including nine La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.

His memorable moments include a stunning equalizer against Chelsea in the 2009 Champions League semi-final leading to Barcelona’s eventual victory over Manchester United in the final. In 2018, Iniesta joined Vissel Kobe in Japan later moving to UAE Pro League side Emirates in 2023. Off the pitch, Iniesta opened up about his struggle with depression following the death of his friend, Espanyol midfielder Dani Jarque, just before the 2010 World Cup.

He emphasized that even the darkest moments can lead to significant life changes, citing his World Cup-winning goal as a pivotal moment. Tributes poured in from the football community, including Lionel Messi, who called Andrés Iniesta a “magical teammate.” Journalists praised his impact on football, highlighting his exceptional skill, vision and the legacy he leaves behind.
