Arne Slot has had an impressive start at Liverpool, accomplishing something Jurgen Klopp only achieved once in his eight seasons by winning the first three Premier League games without conceding a goal. Replacing Klopp, who won the Champions League and Premier League with the club, Slot faced skepticism but early signs are promising. BBC pundit Chris Sutton notes the team now plays with more control under Slot, contrasting Klopp’s more frantic style.

Liverpool’s defense, a weakness last season appears stronger despite no significant personnel changes aside from Juventus winger Federico Chiesa joining but not yet debuting. Ryan Gravenberch, initially a fringe player has impressed in a defensive midfield role, despite fans calling for a new signing. Arne Slot has shifted the formation to a 4-2-3-1, favoring Diogo Jota over Darwin Nunez up front.

The midfield is more defensively robust with Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister sitting deeper, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to play further forward. Statistically, Klopp’s side outperformed Slot’s in metrics like possession, shots and direct attacks but Slot’s team has been more accurate with passing and has faced fewer shots, pointing to improved defensive solidity.

Liverpool’s star Mohamed Salah noted the team now emphasizes more control in possession, a departure from Klopp’s high-energy counter-pressing style. BBC observers highlight that while Slot’s Liverpool is more measured and controlled, they still retain the pressing intensity offering a new balance that seems to be working effectively early on.
