Beto, Everton striker has shared that he thrives on criticism and the presence of “haters” to motivate himself, despite facing challenges during his first season in England. The 26-year-old Portuguese forward, who joined Everton from Udinese for £25 million last summer, initially impressed with a debut goal against Doncaster in the Carabao Cup. However, he managed only four more goals throughout the season.
In an interview with BBC Sport, Beto revealed that he uses criticism as fuel to improve his performance. He explained, “Football is simple. People work long hours and come home to watch us play. Not everyone will love or hate you, and that’s fine with me.” He admits to taking negative comments personally, using them to drive his determination. “When I read criticism, I remember it during training, and it pushes me to prove them wrong.”
Beto’s role at Everton last season was primarily as a substitute with 27 of his 37 appearances coming off the bench. He emphasized the importance of competition in his career, stating, “I need competition and criticism to stay alert and focused. It’s different when you’re not competing; you can become complacent.”
Having started his career at Uniao Tires in Portugal and balancing part-time work at a fast-food restaurant, Beto moved through various clubs before joining Everton. He keeps a record of negative comments to remind himself of his goals and areas for improvement.
Despite Everton’s challenging season, which included point deductions, Beto felt mentally and physically taxed but is optimistic for the future. Reflecting on his adjustment to the Premier League, he said, “It was tough, but now I understand the league better. I know what I need to do to improve and contribute more effectively to the team.”
