Bill Foley: Premier League Games Should Stay in the UK

Bill Foley, Bournemouth owner has expressed strong opposition to the idea of playing Premier League matches outside England. In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport during his club’s pre-season tour in the United States, Foley emphasized his respect for the tradition and fans of the game, stating, “Premier League games should remain in the UK. I wouldn’t want to be involved in changing that.” He believes that pre-season tours, like those Bournemouth is currently undertaking are more appropriate for international play.

FIFA recently announced it would form a working group to explore the impact of playing domestic matches abroad. The Premier League has dismissed plans to hold matches abroad. In contrast, Spain’s La Liga is exploring the possibility of hosting games in the U.S. from the 2025-26 season. Foley bought Bournemouth for £120 million in December 2022. Last June, he made headlines by firing manager Gary O’Neil despite the club finishing 15th. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth improved to a 12th-place finish last season.

The club is part of Foley’s multi-club ownership strategy which includes French club Lorient, Scottish side Hibernian and A-League’s Auckland FC. Additionally, Foley plans to acquire a controlling stake in another club in Portugal. Regarding Bournemouth’s ambitions, Foley stated they aim for a top-eight finish and European qualification. He emphasized the multi-club strategy to develop and promote players through a unified system. This approach, he believes will keep the club competitive without excessive financial strain.

Bill Foley also discussed the future of striker Dominic Solanke, mentioning a £65 million release clause. Foley is confident Solanke will stay and exceed his previous goal tally this season. He mentioned that the club is preparing for potential replacements if necessary. Additionally, Foley provided an update on Tyler Adams, who has struggled with back injuries. He expects Adams to return to full fitness in three months and anticipates he will become a key player for Bournemouth.
