Blackpool Hire Steve Bruce After Critchley Exit

Blackpool has appointed Steve Bruce as their new head coach on a two-year contract. The 63-year-old, who had been without a managerial role since his dismissal from West Bromwich Albion in October 2022 takes over the Seasiders following Neil Critchley’s departure on August 21 due to consecutive losses. Bruce brings extensive experience to Blackpool, having managed over 1,000 competitive matches across clubs such as Birmingham City, Hull City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

He is joined by his long-term assistant Steve Agnew along with coaches Richard Keogh, Stephen Dobbie and Steve Banks. Bruce’s appointment comes after Blackpool’s 4-1 victory over Crewe in the EFL Trophy, signaling a new chapter for the club. Blackpool, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season by finishing eighth have struggled this term, managing only two points from their first four games.

Bruce’s immediate task will be to turn the team’s fortunes around. Owner Simon Sadler expressed confidence in Bruce’s ability to elevate the team, praising his experience, leadership and organizational skills. Sadler also highlighted Bruce’s role in developing both players and coaching staff emphasizing the value of his expertise to the club.

Bruce’s tenure will begin on September 14 when Blackpool faces Exeter City at home. This role marks Bruce’s 13th managerial position since retiring as a player in 1999 and his 12th club including two spells at Wigan.
