Bruno Fernandes Extends Manchester United Stay Until 2027

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United captain has extended his contract, ensuring his stay at Old Trafford until June 2027 with an option for an additional year. The 29-year-old Portuguese midfielder, who Manchester United signed from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, has made 234 appearances for the club, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists. His previous contract, which he signed in 2022 was set to end in 2026.  Fernandes expressed his enthusiasm for the future, stating, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be, and I am relishing leading this team forward.”

He emphasized his dedication and responsibility as captain, a role he took over from Harry Maguire in July 2023. Despite receiving criticism from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane, Fernandes remains dedicated to the club. He believes that his best moments at Manchester United are still ahead. He highlighted memorable experiences such as scoring a hat-trick against Leeds and lifting trophies at Wembley.

Fernandes also noted that he decided to sign the new contract because he believes in the club’s potential for future success. Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, praised Fernandes as a “brilliant leader” whose consistent high-level performance and dedication embody what it means to be a United player. Ashworth expressed excitement about working with Fernandes to achieve the club’s ambitious goals.

Although United did not list Bruno Fernandes among the ‘untouchables’ this summer, they did not receive a bid they considered unacceptable, which solidified his commitment to the club. His renewed contract underscores his pivotal role and ongoing contribution to the club’s aspirations.
