Conor Gallagher has agreed to move to Atletico Madrid, ending his 18-year association with Stamford Bridge. Last week, Chelsea accepted Atletico’s £33 million offer. Despite initial doubts about Gallagher’s interest, the 24-year-old confirmed on Sunday that he is enthusiastic about the switch. Gallagher, a Chelsea academy product, will travel to Madrid to finalize his medical and sign his contract.

This deal will conclude his long tenure at Chelsea, where he had less than a year remaining on his contract. Chelsea had proposed a two-year deal with an option for an additional year, but Gallagher found this offer less appealing due to the contract’s length and his anticipated role in the squad. The club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca employs a possession-based style of play.

Conor Gallagher did not fit well into this system, raising concerns about his regular starting position under the Italian coach. Gallagher also played in five matches at Euro 2024, showcasing his abilities on an international stage. Chelsea preferred to transfer Gallagher to an overseas club rather than a domestic rival, so they accepted Atletico’s cut-price deal.

This move aligns with Chelsea’s strategy to reshape their squad while also supporting Gallagher’s desire for a new challenge in La Liga. The transfer marks a significant shift for Gallagher, who will now bring his talents to a new footballing environment.
