Eddie Howe Rejects England Job Speculation

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United manager, reaffirmed his commitment to the club despite links to the vacant England manager role following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. Southgate resigned after England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Howe, who has managed Newcastle since November 2021 expressed his pride and happiness at the club, emphasizing his love for the supporters, players and staff. Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales also stated that the club intends to retain Howe.

Howe guided Newcastle from relegation threats to a fourth-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification in the 2022-23 season. He signed a multi-year contract extension last summer. Their upcoming season opener against Southampton is on August 17. Regarding squad changes, Newcastle sold midfielder Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and winger Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £35 million and £30 million, respectively, to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. Howe expressed his sadness at losing the two promising young players but acknowledged the necessity of the sales for the club’s financial health.

Additionally, Newcastle signed goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Forest. Midfielder Sandro Tonali, who has served a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules will return at the end of next month. Howe noted Tonali’s improved fitness and readiness as he nears the end of his suspension, highlighting the player’s renewed edge and importance to the team.
