George Burley, Ipswich Town’s legendary former manager and ex-Scotland boss is undergoing cancer treatment, the club has announced. Burley (68) was diagnosed with the illness earlier this year after experiencing health issues. The former defender played for Ipswich from 1973 to 1985 making 500 appearances and managed the club from 1994 to 2002. During his playing career, Burley also had stints with Motherwell, Ayr United and Falkirk.

As a manager, he led Ipswich to Premier League promotion, a feat Kieran McKenna later matched last season. As a manager, Burley also worked with Crystal Palace, Hearts and Southampton. Despite the challenges of his diagnosis, George Burley expressed optimism, stating, “It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now. I am able to attend matches at Portman Road and enjoy watching the team play in the Premier League again.”

He thanked Ipswich Town for their support and requested privacy for his family during this period. Ipswich’s current manager, Kieran McKenna praised Burley as one of the club’s greatest managers noting his positive and optimistic outlook. McKenna emphasized that Burley’s attitude will aid him in his fight against cancer.

Club chairman Mark Ashton also expressed support for Burley, his wife Jill and their family, highlighting the significant impact Burley has had as both a player and manager for Ipswich Town.
