Georginio Rutter has finalized his transfer to Brighton from Leeds United for a club-record fee of £40 million. The 22-year-old Rutter joins the Seagulls on a five-year contract, marking a significant investment by Brighton. Rutter previously played for Leeds, where he scored eight goals in 66 appearances following his move from Hoffenheim in January 2023. That transfer had also set a record for Leeds, with a deal worth up to £36 million.
Brighton’s technical director, David Weir expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, noting that the club had been monitoring Rutter for some time. “He’s a strong technical player and one we are excited to bring to the club,” Weir said, looking forward to Rutter’s development with Brighton. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, the Premier League’s youngest at 31, praised Rutter for his ability to excite fans.
Fabian Hurzeler also noted Georginio Rutter’s proven performance in English football with Leeds. Hurzeler, who has known Rutter since his time at Hoffenheim is eager to integrate the forward into the team. “We’re looking forward to working with him,” Hurzeler added. Despite Leeds’ efforts to retain Rutter, Brighton activated his release clause. Rutter played for Leeds in their Championship opener against Portsmouth.
He made his final appearance in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough before his transfer. Brighton will face Manchester United in their next Premier League match after starting their season with a 3-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.
