Graham Potter Ready for England Role

Graham Potter has expressed his readiness to return to football management amid speculation that he could succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager. Southgate resigned on Tuesday, just days after England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Potter, 49, is a strong contender for the role alongside Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley. Potter, who was dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023, has not managed since then. He has previously led Ostersund, Swansea and Brighton.

He mentioned that he has been in discussions with several clubs but has been waiting for the “right opportunity.” In an interview with Sky Sports, Potter revealed that he is eager to embrace his next challenge. He described his time away from football as beneficial, allowing him to reflect, recharge and explore other sports and teams. During a recent honorary doctorate ceremony at Leeds Beckett University, Potter acknowledged Southgate’s impressive tenure, noting that Southgate had done an exceptional job and was highly respected in football.

Graham Potter preferred not to discuss the England job at that time, suggesting that it was not the right moment. Southgate, who managed England for nearly eight years, led the team to a World Cup quarter-final, a semi-final and consecutive Euros finals. His resignation marks the end of a significant era for the national team. The Football Association is now searching for a new manager and aims to appoint someone “as soon as possible.”
