Joao Neves joined Paris St-Germain from Benfica in a deal potentially worth up to £60m. The 19-year-old Portugal international, who attracted interest from Manchester United, has committed to a five-year contract with the French champions. Consequently, this move signifies a significant step in his career, aligning him with one of Europe’s top clubs.
Notably, Neves broke into Benfica’s first team in January of the previous year and quickly became a key player, making 75 appearances and scoring four goals across all competitions. Moreover, Benfica announced an initial transfer fee of £50m, with potential add-ons bringing the total to £60m.
PSG are looking to rebuild after star forward Kylian Mbappe’s summer departure to Real Madrid. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi praised Neves, saying, “Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally. He was passionate about joining PSG and is determined to fight for the jersey, which is what we expect from all our players.”
Furthermore, Neves, who has nine caps for Portugal and played in two matches during this summer’s European Championship in Germany, expressed his excitement about the move. He stated, “I’m very proud to join Paris St-Germain, a very ambitious club. I will give my all to help my teammates, grow at this fantastic club, and win numerous titles.”
