Joe Allen’s Comeback: A Gamble for Wales

Joe Allen’s potential start in Monday’s match against Montenegro would be a gamble, acknowledges Craig Bellamy, who also expresses a desire to witness the “romance” of the veteran midfielder’s return to the Welsh national team. The 34-year-old Allen recently came out of international retirement to join Wales’ squad for the Nations League double-header. However, he did not play in Friday’s 2-2 draw with Iceland.

Fitness issues have limited Allen to only six substitute appearances for Swansea City this season. With Ethan Ampadu, Aaron Ramsey and Jordan James unavailable, Wales faces a shortage of midfield options. “Of course he’s a gamble if you throw him in from the start because of his minutes and football this year,” said Bellamy. “That goes for a lot of our players as well.

A lot of them do very good work even though they’re not playing. Their clubs run incredibly well.” Bellamy remains hopeful that Allen will contribute positively, stating, “Even if he doesn’t, he’s had an incredible week for us.” Allen has earned 74 caps and represented Wales at two European Championships and a World Cup. He retired from international football in 2023.

If he plays against Montenegro at Cardiff City Stadium, the former Liverpool midfielder will likely receive a warm welcome. Bellamy emphasizes Wales’ ongoing struggle with depth in central midfield, particularly after key players like Joe Ledley and Andy King retired. With injuries and suspensions affecting Ampadu and James, Bellamy’s options include Allen, his Swansea teammate Ollie Cooper and Bolton’s Josh Sheehan.

“We are light in the number six area,” Bellamy noted. He remains optimistic about finding creative solutions to bolster the team.
