Jonas Eidevall faced mounting pressure at Arsenal which led to his unexpected resignation on Tuesday morning. Although the club did not formally seek a change, Eidevall chose to step down after a disheartening start to the season where his team managed only one win in four Women’s Super League matches. This poor performance compounded the significant 5-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage.

Former Arsenal player Ellen White expressed her shock at Eidevall’s decision, emphasizing the pressures surrounding both the manager and the club. She noted the disjointed nature of the team’s tactics especially during their recent 2-1 defeat against Chelsea, which left her struggling to discern a coherent game plan. Former defender Jen Beattie, who played under Eidevall expressed that she was not shocked by his departure.

She attributed it to the noticeable burden of criticism he faced. Fans have increasingly scrutinized managers in the women’s game with supporters openly expressing their discontent during matches. Beattie acknowledged that heightened media and fan attention brings more criticism suggesting that this evolution in women’s football comes as clubs attract more investment and demand.

England manager Sarina Wiegman remarked on the negative consequences that accompany the sport’s rapid growth highlighting the dual nature of progress in women’s football. As Arsenal searches for Jonas Eidevall’s successor, several candidates have emerged including Casey Stoney and former Netherlands coach Mark Parsons. The Gunners also have promising internal options including Kelly Smith and Melissa Clarke-Reed.

Furthermore, interim head coach Renee Slegers could also be a candidate. Ultimately, the club seeks to revive their traditional playing style and fully harness the talent within their squad.
