Joshua Zirkzee Joins United: Five-Year Contract Secured

Joshua Zirkzee has joined Manchester United from Bologna in a £36.54 million deal. The 23-year-old has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford with an option for an additional year. United negotiated a slightly higher fee than Zirkzee’s £33.6 million release clause at Bologna, spreading payments over three years to adhere to Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Zirkzee, who impressed with 12 goals in 37 appearances for Bologna last season, joins United amid strategic ownership changes, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a significant stake in December. Previously with Bayern Munich and Feyenoord, Zirkzee moved to Bologna for approximately £7.15 million after successful loan spells at Parma and Anderlecht.

Named Serie A’s Under-23 Player of the Year for 2023/24, Zirkzee expressed excitement about joining a prestigious club like Manchester United, aiming to elevate his career and add to his trophy collection. Dan Ashworth, United’s new sporting director, highlighted Zirkzee’s potential impact, praising his talent and ambition to become a top-tier player.

Manager Erik ten Hag, facing challenges with the departure of Anthony Martial and tactical shifts involving players like Rasmus Hojlund, emphasized the importance of bolstering United’s attacking options. Despite signing for £72 million in 2023, Hojlund faced competition from Bruno Fernandes, who played a pivotal role in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
